Statement Of Consent For Traveling With Children

Minors traveling abroad without their parents may be denied entry or exit in certain countries unless they bring a declaration of consent.

What is a consent statement for traveling with children?

If your child is going abroad alone or with another adult in connection with holidays, family visits or school stays, it is important to keep track of the rules, which applies in connection with entry and exit abroad as a minor.

Some countries do not allow children and young people to enter or leave the country unless they are either accompanied by their parents or have a written permission from the parents. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that you comply with the country of entry and exit.

A declaration of consent is thus a document in which one or both parents give another person or other persons the right to travel with a minor child abroad. Therefore, it is also a requirement that all parents with parental responsibility sign the consent statement.

Which countries require a declaration of consent?

There is no complete list of countries that do not allow minors to enter and leave alone. The definition of when children and adolescents are considered minors also varies from country to country. Therefore, it is recommended that you contact the embassy or consulate of the country your child is traveling to for more information on what is required.

What does a consent statement contain?

A declaration of consent must generally contain the following information:

  • Child’s name, address, date of birth, passport number and nationality

  • The accompanying adult’s name, address, passport number and nationality as well as any relation to the child

  • Name, address, nationality and telephone number of both parents or custody holders

  • Information on travel destination, travel dates and contact information during the stay

  • If the child is traveling with an adult who is not the child’s parent, consideration should be given to empowering the accompanying adult to take care of the child’s best interests during the journey, for example in connection with sudden illness on the journey

In addition, it is also recommended to enclose the child’s birth certificate and a copy of the parent’s passport. If you have sole custody, documentation of this can be usefully attached to the consent statement.
