Why do I need NemID or MitID?

 

MitID and NemID is every resident’s personal key to digital services in Denmark, including self-service solutions provided by the public sector.

In Denmark, your contact with the public authorities and many private companies starts on the internet. In a large number of areas, you are obliged to use digital self-service.

In order to access digital self-services, you need NemID/MitID which is your personal digital ID for login and digital signature. It allows for citizens to access their public services 24 hours a day.

How is MitID different from NemID?

NemID was devised to work as a digital identification means and as a digital signature. This double function has not been transposed into MitID. MitID is a pure authentication solution that does not support signing.

 

Can I still use NemID?

NemID is closing. After June 30th, NemID will continue with limited operation and gradually phase out until October 31st 2023.
 

Do I still need NemID?

Over the course of 2021 and 2022, MitID will replace NemID. The last NemID users will migrate from NemID to MitID no later than 30 June 2022. Even though you are getting MitID, you need to keep NemID for now. You will be notified directly when you no longer need NemID.
