What is a coach contract?

When association is in the process of hiring a coach, it is important that the coach is employed under a formal coach contract. This contract will carefully outline the relevant terms of employment, including the coach’s specific job responsibilities and the expectations of the association. A coach contract serves as a means of legal protection for both the coach and the association, ensuring that all parties are aware of their obligations and rights. This helps to prevent any misunderstandings that may arise and ensures that the relationship between the coach and the sports association is professional and runs smoothly. Therefore, it is critical for any association to have a coach contract in place when hiring a new coach.

Why should I make a coach contract?

As per the Employment Certificate Act, it is mandatory for all employers to furnish a written employment contract while hiring a new paid employee. This has to be done within a month of the employment start date, unless the employee works eight hours or less per week. Employers are not bound to prepare a contract if the employment is shorter than one month. Failure to prepare the contract before the deadline may require employers to pay compensation to the employee. The same applies to associations that hire coaches. Therefore, it is vital to have a written coaching contract whenever a new coach is hired or an existing coach’s contract is extended to prevent any misunderstandings or conflicts later.

A voluntary or unpaid coach does not legally require an employment contract

Nevertheless, a written contract is still advisable for purposes of clarity and agreement on the volunteers’ terms, such as financial reimbursements for expenses, obtaining any necessary child certificates, and other critical terms of the association’s work with the coach.
